VMU Centre for Asian Studies together with clubs “Hashi”, “Hallyu” and “Wu Wei” invites all to spend the late October days in the surroundings of the colorful and exotic cultures. On October 20-24 in Kaunas the citizens and city guests will be welcomed to join VMU Asian Week. During this exciting week of events participants will have a chance to familiarize and get a closer look to the East and Southeast Asian countries.

On October 20th at VMU Small Hall (28 Daukanto st., 2nd floor) the opening of VMU Asian week will take place. Greetings from representative of VMU will be followed by Japan’s ambasador in Lithuania H. E. Kazuko Shiraishi, Peoples Republic of China ambasador H. E. Zengwen Liu, cultural attache in embassy of Indonesia in the kingdom of Denmark Mrs. Epiphania Riris Wusananingdyah, director of Confucius Institute at Vilnius University prof. Zhang Donghui, and mayor of Kaunas city Mr. Andrius Kupčinskas. The first to start our program will be the Languages Day. For the first time in Lithuania Korean and Chinese speech contests will be held. Those who are willing to participate must prepare a short speech in Korean or Chinese. The winners will be rewarded with valuable gifts. For the Japanese language lovers “Hashi” Club prepared a surprise – an interactive Japanese language game. Also, the Indonesian language workshop will be organized.

Applicants must fill the attached forms for Chinese and Korean speech contests. Chinese language contest application form ; Korean language contest application form. At 19:00 everyone is invited to a meeting with Dalia Ibelhauptaitė – a famous Lithuanian artist, stage director, traveler and public woman. Meeting will be held at VMU Theatre Hall (Daukanto 27, Kaunas).

October 21st is all about the taste of Asia – Food Day events will take place. The introduction to 4 different Asian cuisines is planned – Indonesian dish nasi goreng, Japanese temaki-zushi, Korean samgyeopsal And Chinese dumplings jiaozi. Place: restaurant “Yakata” (M. Valančiaus st. 14). Later this evening, since 19:00, a meeting with Kęstutis Ptakauskas will take place at VMU Romanovo Hall (Donelaičio 60). Kęstutis Ptakauskas is most famous Lithuanian bonsai specialist – bonsai trees grown by Kęstutis often win various prizes at international events. Also, Mr. Ptakauskas specializes in Japanese gardens – not only he has made a garden in his own homestead, he has ben organizing the establishment of various public gardens as well. October 22nd is dedicated to Martial Arts Day. At the East martial arts studio “Wudang Tao” (P. Kalpoko st. 1 – 26) Japanese, Chinse, Korean and Vietnamese martial arts schools will introduce everyone to their own respective martial arts and teach the basics for those who are willing to learn.
The evening will be finished with a exceptionally interesting presentation about North Korea. Jonas Slivka and Ieva Martikonytė will share their impressions about this mysterious and closed country and what did they see during their trip to North Korea this summer.

October 23rd VMU Great Hall (S. Daukanto st. 28) will be filled with the stands and booths for Culture Day. Our culture fair will offer to experience the secrets of Asian countries’ crafts, arts, language, kimono presentation, attend the tea ceremony and try your steady hand in the caligraphy workshops. Also during the event Asian flee market will be open, so you all are encouraged to bring something that is related to Asia, but for you it is no longer useful or simply takes up too much space – maybe for others it will be a treasure.
Treasure may be not only things but ideas, too. Andrius Gurskis is a successful entrepreneur doing business with China and he will present his own perspective and experience from working with Chinese businessmen. Andrius will hold the presentation at VMU Great Hall.

Last day, October 24th is to excersise your brain – Knowledge Day at VMU Magna Aula (Gimnazijos st. 7). Starting at 14:30, teams will be competing against each other in order to find out who has the most knowledge about Asian countries. Some of the questions are made by the sponsors so the winners can expect to be awarded with fun and valuable prizes. You can register your teams here.
