Taiwan Center to be Established

On 1 March, VMU will open its new division, Taiwan Centre – the first of its kind in the entire Eastern Europe. The occasion will be marked with a festive opening ceremony and the international scientific conference Chinese / Taiwanese Studies in Baltic States, which will begin at 9.20 a.m. that day in the VMU Small Hall (S. Daukanto g. 28).

Guests of the event include Representative of Taipei Mission in Riga ambassador Gary K. Y. Ko with delegation, President of National Taiwan University Lee Si-Chen, Dean of the College of Social Sciences in the National Cheng-Chi University Yih-chyi Chuang and researchers from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and the USA. On February 26 (Tuesday) at 16:00 you are invited to the presentation of the book “Užupio respublika” and its translation, which will be held in VMU History Hall (K. Donelaicio str. 58). During the presentation you will meet the author of the book, Korean writer Hailji (the original name Rim Jong Joo), translator from Korean Dr. Martynas Šiaučiūnas- Kačinskas, writer Kornelijus Platelis and researcher of  VMU Centre for Asian Studies Seo Jinseok. Laima JuknevičiūtėLaima Jukneviciute, Master’s degree student from Vytautas Magnus University who finished East Asia Region Studies at the VMU Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy in Spring, has been accepted to full-time doctoral studies at the Academy of Korean Studies in South Korea and has won the PhD scholarship from the Goverment of ROK.

Academy of Korean Studies is one of the leading academic institutions in South Korea, actively promoting Korean culture and society studies in the World. Thanks to the cooperation between the Academy and VMU, Laima Jukneviciute was the first student from Lithuania, who got a fellowship at the Academy in the Spring semester of 2012. During her fellowship, she whote her Master thesis, which was successfully defended. During her PhD studies at AKS, Laima is going to continue her research, and the preliminary title of her future Dissertation is “Innovative Gender Imaginaries in South Korea’s Contemporary TV Dramas and Movies: The Dormant Potential of the Cute Male and the Emotionally Emancipated Female in Re-shaping the Global Cinematic Trends”. On November 23 Vytautas Magnus University was visited by the Representative of Taipei Mission in Riga, ambassador Gary K. Y. Ko and the accompanying delegation. The guests had a meeting with the Rector of VMU Prof. Zigmas Lydeka, Vice-Rector Prof. Auksė Balčytienė, and head of VMU International Office Ms. Zina Baltrėnienė.

Later the guests visited the Centre for Asian Studies and the memorial museum of Sugihara. During the meetings VMU and Taipei Mission delegation members discussed various possibilities of collaboration and development of Chinese studies at Vytautas Magnus University. (more…)

Centre for Asian Studies invites to the public lecture  “Principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine” by the specialist of traditional Chinese medicine Liu Jingfeng. The lecture will be held with the support of Confucius Institute.

The lecture will be held on Thursday, November 29, 18:00 at VMU Faculty of Humanities (Donelaicio str. 52, Kaunas, room 422)

Language of the lecture will be Chinese, with the translation into Lithuanian. Everyone is welcome to participate.

On November 3, 2012, the Government of Japan announced that Mr. Arvydas Ališauskas, ex-head of the Japanese Studies Centre, was conferred with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for his contribution to promoting Japanese culture and advancing Japanese language studies in Lithuania.

Mr. Ališauskas is the first Lithuanian private person who has received this decoration from the Government of Japan. It is expected that this conferment will further promote and strengthen relations between Japan and Lithuania. (more…)

On October 22, a Vice-President prof. Ha Chang-Sik of Pusan National University visited VMU with his delegation. On this occation, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between both Universities, with aim to smoothen students’ and scholars’ exchange.

The universities started the academic exchange several years ago. Recently, both institutions started discussions about the official documents for cooperation. It is expected, that signing of official agreement will help for academic and student exchange, collaboration in joint research and other projects.

PNU is one of ten flagship Korean national universities and a leading university in South Korea. Located in the second biggest city of South Korea, PNU comprises 12 colleges and general graduate schools and 6 professional graduate schools, and it contributes to the development of the nation and the world by producing prominent experts and talented leaders.
