Linas Didvalis, Master’s degree student from Vytautas Magnus University who has just finished East Asia Region Studies at the VMU Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy, has been accepted to full-time doctoral studies at the International Christian University in Japan, which are to begin in autumn this year.

The VMU student, who is about to receive his MA diploma, won the selection at Vytautas Magnus University and was nominated by the VMU International Office for the Japanese government-sponsored Monbukagakusho Scholarship (MEXT) in January. The commission of Japanese government informed of its final decision half a year later, declaring that Linas Didvalis will be awarded the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship, and the costs of his doctoral studies as well as travel expenses will be covered. Centre for Asian Studies invites to Korean days festival “Korea comes to Lithuania”, which will be held on July 9-11 in different parts of Lithuania. During the festival the citizens and guests of Kaunas, Vilnius and Druskininkai will have an opportunity to become acquainted with exotic culture of Korea

The dynamic and colorful concert of traditional Korean music and dance will become a culmination of all three evenings. The ensemble “Yeongnam Yesuldan” from South Korea will perform cheerful female dances with fan, music of archaic instrument gayageum and acrobatic tricks with drums. Furthermore, before the events you’ll be able to visit a Culture Fair, where you’ll be taught to make traditional paper crafts, to put on a beautiful garment hanbok, to write your name in Korean alphabet Hangeul. AZykasThe doctoral disertation “Policy of Country’s Image: the Experience of Japan’s 21st Century Public Diplomacy” by Aurelijus Zykas will be defended on 20 June, 14:00 at the Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy (202 aud.).

The dissertation investigates the peculiarities and changes of Japan’s public diplomacy during late 1900’s and early 2000’s, and identifies the factors, which influenced or hindered its success. The raised question was, how Japanese Government manages to achieve the success of its international image in early 2000’s and what are the main newly raising challenges in the post-Cold War world. The Centre for Asian Studies has started implementing the EU funded project “Feasibility Study on the Transnational Development of Asian Studies at VMU”. The main goal of the project is to prepare a feasibility study for VMU Joint Degree Program in the field of East Asian Studies (political science) and to sign the Memorandums of Understanding with other universities in this regard.

In response to the shortfall of specialists familiar with the political, economic and cultural specifics of East Asia region, VMU launched the postgraduate East Asian Studies program in the field of political science in 2007. It is expected that a newly planned Joint degree program (with at least two foreign universities participating) would ensure a more systematic development of Asian Studies in Lithuania towards internationalization. VMU Centre for Asian Studies invites to lectures of Dr. Lauri Paltemaa (Centre for East Asian Studies, Turku University, Finland) on the political situation of modern China. Lectures will be delivered on 3-5, May at the Centre for Asian Studies (Vaižganto 30, Kaunas).

The lectures are part of the course “Political development of China” (lect. J. Razumaitė) of the MA East Asia Region Studies program. We invite everybody to join the lectures.

Lectures will be held on:

  • May 4: 14:00-15:30 ir 15:45-17:15
  • May 5: 14:00-15:30

In March (2011), the Centre for Asian Studies successfully finished the research project “Japan as Represented in the European Media: Its Analytical Methodolgies and Theories – in Comparison with Korean Cases”, supported by Japan Foundation. As result, the selection of articles was published. This selection is based mainly on the results of the fourth international conference organised by the Centre for Asian studies at Vytautas Magnus University. The volume discusses not only the Image of Japan in Europe, but also the image of Korea in Europe, in order to compare the images of these two different Eastern Asian countries, and, furthermore, to make the specificities of the image of Japan in Europe, with reference to the Korean image, clearer. This book is composed of three chapters and two special contributions.

The exhibition of Lithuanian books on East Asia is opened from April 7, 2011 at Vytautas Magnus University, near the V. Biržiška reading hall (K. Donelaičio g. 52, second floor). The books on Japan, China, Korea and Vietnam, published in Lithuania during 20-21st centuries, are exhibited. The books of Lithuanian authors on the East Asian countries, and the Lithuanian translations of East Asian authors are represented.

The exhibits are divided into three periods: Prewar (1906-1939), Soviet (1945-1989) and Independence (since 1990) periods.

Organizers: VMU Library and the Centre for Asian Studies. This exhibition is one of the events, organized on the occation of 10 years anniversary of the establishment of the Centre for Asian Studies. (more…)
