The Little Theatre of Kyōgen is a professional theatre group active in translating, workshopping, and staging the traditional Japanese farces called kyōgen. The group co-operates with the Japanese master and patron of the group, Mr. Shigeyama Shime. Currently the group‘s repertoire consists of six kyogen farces and one adaptation of Chinese fairytale inspired by the Noh theatre. The group’s mandate is to introduce the traditional Japanese art of kyōgen to Czech audiences. Nonetheless, the group believes that the specific and crystal clear style of kyōgen translates across the various cultures, as well as languages.
Kyōgen is a form of traditional Japanese theatre, developed alongside Noh, as it was performed along with Noh as an intermission of sorts between Noh acts. Kyōgen‘s content is not similar to the formal and symbolic Noh theater. Kyōgen is a comical form, and its primary goal is to make its audience laugh.
