The Centre for Asian Studies invites scholars of area studies, tourism, international economics and other subjects to submit papers to an international conference “Travel and Mutual Understanding: East Asia, Europe and Beyond“, to be held October 20-21 in Kaunas. The conference focuses on travel as an opportunity for inter-cultural learning and both material and immaterial exchanges.
It is expected that the conference papers will review the history of travelers’ contacts, tourism policy, tourist industry and other related topics spanning from early 20th century until today and having ties to East Asia. Historical, sociological, anthropological and other social science approaches are welcome. (more…)
Centre for Asian Studies (CAS) starts cooperation with K-Developedia project initiated by South Korean government. K-Developedia will help CAS staff and students focusing on Korean studies to further improve their research and expand knowledge about contemporary South Korea. At this state, CAS and K-Developedia will exchange information, but it is expected that cooperation will also expand to other fields in the future.
K-Developedia is an open database with more than 35 000 items of information that cover development experience of South Korea. The project started in 2012 by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance with a goal to make it an easily accessible source of information for academia, governmental institutions and the whole society. Materials in the database (reports, journals, statistical data, photos, videos) cover such fields as economy, industry, technology, land development, law, and others. (more…)
Centre for Asian Studies invites everyone to see the photo exhibition „On the Go“ which is provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania together with Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Asia-Europe Meeting. Exhibition may be visited at VMU Gedimino 44 building until 12th of May.
The photo contest by ASEF was held last year and photojournalist from Lithuania Berta Tilmantaitė became one of laureates with her photo „On the boat“. Competition was among more than 1500 artists from 50 countries.
On April 16th one of the biggest newspapers in Japan Asahi Shimbun published an article based on VMU Centre for Asian Studies head Dr. Aurelijus Zykas. Article mainly contains information about newly published Japanese-Lithuanian dictionary. Article can be found here.
Akiyoshi Komaki, author of the article, recently visited Kaunas and talked with some of the Japanese-Lithuanian dictionary creators. The fact, which surprised him the most was that Dr. Aurelijus Zykas gathered information for the dictionary in 12 years using English, Russian, Spanish dictionaries, encyclopedias and synonyms dictionaries.
From 7 to 9 April 2016, the 2nd Baltic Alliance for Asian Studies (BAAS) Conference took place at the University of Tartu (UT) followed by the BAAS Board meeting on the 9 April. The conference was organised by the UT Centre for Oriental Studies, which was the 2014–2016 chair of the BAAS, together with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
Three keynote speeches, 90 papers in 11 panels and 7 sections and 13 poster presentations were held during the three-day-conference. Beside three Baltic countries, Asian Studies’ scholars from 16 other countries (Austria, Azerbaijan, China, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Italy, Poland, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, USA) were among participants. Vytautas Magnus University Asian Week (VMU Asian Week) is a one-week long cycle of events, related to East Asia region. This year VMU Asian Week will take place on April 18–22 in various venues of VMU and other public places.
VMU Asian Week aims to provide a better understanding of the region and to raise awareness about Japan, Korea and China in an accessible and attractive way. The events are open not only to university‘s community but also to everyone interested in East Asia. Centre for Asian Studies invites everyone to the exhibition of Yusho calligraphy artworks, which will be available at Centre for Asian Studies (Vaižganto str. 30, Kaunas) from April 15 to April 29, 2016. Exhibition is presented by the Embassy of Japan in Lithuania.
On the Opening day (April 15), from 15:00 a presentation and a workshop led by master Kazumine Goda will take part. The exhibition consists of 12 artworks by 6 different authors – Hisae Kurachi, Mihoko Mita, Machiko Terashima, Masako Abe, Kazutake Abe, Kazumine Goda.

We are sharing the invitation to submit abstracts for the 4th annual Student academic Conference, focusing on Asia. The conference will be held on April 24, 11:00-14:00, V. Putvinskio 23-310 in Kaunas, Lithuania.
This event, which has become an integral part of VMU Asian Week, is organized by VMU Regional Studies Asian specialization students and VMU Center for Asian Studies together with the Department of Cultural Studies.
