Vytautas Magnus University invites students both from Lithuania and other countries to apply for Master degree study program East Asia Region Studies (EARS). Applications are accepted until June 27. All necessary application and admission procedures are explained in detail on university’s website. International students of selected countries are also encouraged to use the opportunity of receiving a scholarship offered by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania.
EARS was launched at 2007 and is the first and the only one graduate program in Lithuania and Baltic States that offers English courses in the field of East Asian contemporary politics and society. Research paper and master’s thesis are also written in English. The Program is taught by one of the best specialists of East Asia, regional studies and international relations, including prof. E. Račius, assoc. prof. J.D. Mininger, assoc. prof. V. Vobolevičius, dr. L. Didvalis, dr. I. Karpavičiūtė, dr. G. Česnakas and dr. G. Žukaitė. (more…)
From June 1, 2016, entrance procedures to Lithuanian universities have started. For those interested in East Asian countries, VMU offers BA program (in Lithuanian) “East Asian Languages and Cultures” (“Rytų Azijos šalių kalbos ir kultūros“- RASK).
This program was launched in 2012 at the Faculty of Humanities. The duration of the program is 4 years, the contents of the program focus on Chinese, Japanese and Korean history, religion, art and folklore. The students will have an opportunity to analyse in deep the cultural specifics of these countries and study thousand year old traditions. The students will also be able to learn one of East Asian languages at the advanced level and to gain basic communication skills in a second language upon their choice.
As the student exchange opportunities with East Asian universities have expanded significantly, all students of the program (starting from the second study year) will be encouraged to study at least one semester in one of East Asian universities. After graduation students will acquire bachelor degree in Regional Culture Studies in the field of Humanities.
VMU Centre for Asian Studies Chiune Sugihara Reading Room enters the last stage of moving to other premises. Today, the part of the Reading Room, dedicated to Humanities, Social and Natural Sciences, was started to crate. The funds of Reading Room will be available since autumn. On May 18th Hebei International Studies University Rector prof. Sun Jianzhong with delegation visited VMU Faculty of Humanities. Students and faculty exchange opportunities were discussed and guests have expressed a desire to create a joint program together with VMU. The meeting was attended by Asian Studies Centre head dr. Aurelius Zykas, who represented longtime ASC experience in the field of Chinese studies.
The second national level “Chinese Bridge” competition was held on May 7th in Vilnius. During this event Lithuanian students who could speak Chinese compete with each other for an opportunity to represent Lithuania in the World “Chinese Bridge. One of the participants was VMU fourth year student Rimvydas Markevičius who fascinated commission not only with excellent Chinese language but also an exceptional talent – calligraphic writing. During this year contest Rimvydas won second place, and together with the winner Saulė Bulavaitė (Vilnius University) received the right of way to represent Lithuania in China.
We would like to invite proposals for the upcoming issue of a semi-annual open access blind peer review journal ‘International Journal of Area Studies‘ (IJAS) to be published in March, 2017. This issue is constructed on a trans-regional basis and we welcome the texts dealing with North Europe, East Asia, South Asia, Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Application Deadline: October 31, 2016
The Journal, published semiannually in March and October, is devoted to area studies from the humanities and social sciences perspectives (including but not limited to research on history, religion, philosophy, politics, and social processes in the regions of the world). The Centre for Asian Studies invites scholars of area studies, tourism, international economics and other subjects to submit papers to an international conference “Travel and Mutual Understanding: East Asia, Europe and Beyond“, to be held October 20-21 in Kaunas. The conference focuses on travel as an opportunity for inter-cultural learning and both material and immaterial exchanges.
It is expected that the conference papers will review the history of travelers’ contacts, tourism policy, tourist industry and other related topics spanning from early 20th century until today and having ties to East Asia. Historical, sociological, anthropological and other social science approaches are welcome. (more…)

We are sharing the invitation to submit abstracts for the 4th annual Student academic Conference, focusing on Asia. The conference will be held on April 24, 11:00-14:00, V. Putvinskio 23-310 in Kaunas, Lithuania.
This event, which has become an integral part of VMU Asian Week, is organized by VMU Regional Studies Asian specialization students and VMU Center for Asian Studies together with the Department of Cultural Studies.
