On December 08, the agreement was signed between Vytautas Magnus University and Showa Women’s University (SWU) in Japan . This is the thirteenth partner university of VMU in Japan.
Japan Women’s School of Higher Education (日本女子高等学院, Nihon Joshi Kōtō Gakuin), the predecessor of this university, was established by poet Enkichi Hitomi (pseudonym: Tōmei Hitomi), who gathered together his intelligentsia friends that sympathized with the minds of those fashionable idols at the time, notably Leo Tolstoy, Rabindranath Tagore and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
2015 March 31st , VMU Rector Prof. Zigmas Lydeka paid a visit to SWU and met with rector Prof. Mariko Bando. During the visit, the opportunity to conclude an agreement and expand student exchange network was discussed. On November 27, the agreement was signed between Vytautas Magnus University and Lingnan University in Hong Kong. This is the first partner university of VMU in Hong Kong and the fourth in China.
Lingnan University (嶺南大學 Ling Nam Tai Hok) was founded as Canton Christian College in Guangzhou in 1889 and moved to Hong Kong in 1967. It is the only public liberal arts university in Hong Kong and it aims to provide students with an education in the liberal arts tradition. In 2015, Lingnan University was selected as one of the ‘Top 10 Asian Liberal Arts Colleges’ by Forbes.
VMU Centre for Asian studies and Japan Embassy in Lithuania invite everyone to a demonstration by Mr Takamasa Fujima, distinguished Japanese traditional dancer, who will perform the dance, and demonstrate what Japanese traditional dance is. The event will take place on the 4th of December (Friday), 16:00 in the Centre for Asian Studies, Vaižganto 30. Event is free of charge.
The history of Japanese traditional dance can go back to 400 years ago. The dance expresses life style and entertainment of Japanese people. Takamasa Fujima is a Japanese traditional dancer born in Tokyo in 1971. After graduating from the playwriting course of Nihon University College of Art, he has continued to create new types of Japanese traditional dance that relate to farce. (more…)
On 2015 November Centre for Asian Studies’ researcher Dr. Aurelijus Zykas participated in a Workshop on China-Europe Relations organized by China Foreign Affairs University. The workshop gathers reasearchers and diplomats from all over Europe who are actively involved in the development of China-EU academic, diplomatic and other relations. Aurelijus Zykas was the only representative selected to represent Lithuania in this year’s seminar.
Intensive 3-weeks-program awaits for the participants, during which the lectures about China’s politics, economy, history and international relations will be held, memebers of the program will learn about the newest projects of PRC, meet with the representatives of the government, visit large enterprices. Although for most of the time the program will happen in Beijing, visits to Shanghai and Shaangxi province are included as well. (more…)
Recently, Centre for Asian Studies was invited to join the “Sakura Network”, which aims to enhance the quality of overseas Japanese language education and provides opportunities to learn the Japanese language. This opportunty is proposed for the institutions that have succeeded in launching a number of excellent projects. CAS is the first institution in Lithuania (and in the Baltic States) that has got this possibility.
Since 2008, Sakura Network members play a significant role in terms of enhancing Japanese language education in their region or country by utilizing various support programs provided by the Japan Foundation. By the end of the fiscal year 2014, the number of Sakura Network members had expanded to 127 institutions in 45 countries. (more…)
VMU Centre for Asian Studies invites to theDay of Japan events which will be held in the Historical Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania in Kaunas ( Vilniaus 33, Kaunas) on the 23rd of October. Japanese Ambassador in Lithuania H.E. Toyoei Shigeeda and Ambassador of Japan in charge of Public Diplomacy in Europe H.E. Masafumi Ishii will come to Kaunas and they would like to invite all to discuss Japan’s position in the world and the future of Japan-Lithuania relations.
At the end of discussions Ambassador T. Shigeeda will officially present the award of gratitude to the Centre for Asian Studies that was issued by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

According to the guest, in formulating security policy, one should make sober assessment of your own future strength, identify major regional and global trend and then decide what one should do now. Every year the Centre for Asian Studies at VMU organizes a conference on East Asia from the perspective of various research disciplines. In the past, annual conferences have focused on sociological or religious aspects of East Asian societies. This year’s topic is economy, and in particular – trade and other economic relations between the EU, its Eastern neighborhood, and East Asia. The event will take place on October 21-22, in VMU Small Hall (Daukanto 28, Kaunas).
“Information about the spectacular economic growth and rising global prominence of East Asia is abundant, but the role of the academic community is to make sense of the processes, connections and implications of this,” says the coordinator of this conference, CAS junior researcher Daiva Repečkaitė. Simona Vasilevskyte, senior coordinator of the Centre for Asian Studies, has been accepted for the 6 months lenght fellowship at Japanese Language Centre in Urawa (Saitama prefecture), which is sponsored by Japan Foundation. During her fellowship, she will study the Japanese language teaching methodology.
Japan Foundation, established in 1972, is one of the institutions of Japan, promoting international cultural exchange through the implementation of comprehensive programs. Its main activities are: Arts and Cultural Exchange, Japanese language education overseas, Japanese studies and intellectual exchange. The JF contributes to developing Japanese studies around the world by supporting outstanding research topics both in the humanities and social sciences.
This October 13th the first screening of a movie about Chiune Sugihara will take place in the historical movie theater “Romuva”. During this exclusive premiere the viewers not only will be the first ones in the world to watch the film (the Tokyo premiere is set in December), but also will have a rare opportunity to meet with the director Cellin Gluck as well as the actors who played main roles in it – Toshiaki Karasawa (as Chiune Sugihara) and Koyuki (as Yukiko Sugihara).
The start of the premiere – 18:00, doors open at 17:00. The event is free of charge. The film will be shown in an original language (Japanese and English) with Lithuanian subtitles.
Chiune Sugihara was a Japanese Vice-Consul in Lithuania who lived in Kaunas (in a current historical building “Sugihara House”) during the period of 1939 – 1940. While residing there, he saved thousands of Jewish people lives by issuing exit visas to Japan allowing them to flee from the holocaust and the occupation of Nazis. (more…)

We are sharing the invitation to submit abstracts for the 4th annual Student academic Conference, focusing on Asia. The conference will be held on April 24, 11:00-14:00, V. Putvinskio 23-310 in Kaunas, Lithuania.
This event, which has become an integral part of VMU Asian Week, is organized by VMU Regional Studies Asian specialization students and VMU Center for Asian Studies together with the Department of Cultural Studies.
